We are dedicated to helping our members provide the highest standard of extracorporeal medicine and perfusion care for Ontarians while driving the profession of perfusion forward at the government, regulatory and public levels. We work to increase awareness and understanding of the role that perfusionists play in ensuring the health of patients.
Alec Thorpe Award 2023:
Mr. Nolan Cooper
The Ontario Society of Clinical Perfusion (OSCP) is thrilled to announce that Mr. Nolan Cooper (London Health Sciences Centre, London, ON) has been honoured as the recipient of the prestigious 2023 Alex Thorpe Award (CSCP). Mr. Cooper's exceptional performance, achieving the highest score among first-time writers on the 2023 National Certification Exam, is a testament to his dedication and skill in perfusion.
The Alex Thorpe Award honours the legacy of Dr. Alec Thorpe, an esteemed Ontario perfusionist. Dr. Thorpe was pivotal in establishing the open-heart surgery program at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, alongside Dr. Paul Fields in the late 1970s. Notably, Dr. Fields performed the first-ever coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery in Canada in Sudbury in 1968, with Dr. Thorpe as his perfusionist. Following Dr. Fields' passing, a cardiologist who had collaborated with Dr. Thorpe advocated for Laurentian University to recognize Dr. Thorpe's contributions by awarding him an honorary PhD. Dr. Thorpe was a dedicated perfusionist with a deep passion for the profession and actively supported aspiring students.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Cooper on this outstanding achievement. The OSCP is confident that Mr. Cooper's skills and dedication will significantly benefit the field of perfusion in Ontario.
Land Acknowledgement
The Ontario Society of Clinical Perfusion (OSCP) acknowledges the enduring presence of Indigenous peoples on the lands on which we gather across Ontario, and we thank the past, present and future caretakers of this land.
These lands are gathering points where age-old ceremonies of celebration, initiation and renewal took place. The OSCP is grateful to have the opportunity to work and learn on these lands in a community of sharing.
