Bad Heparin

Andrew Zajac's picture

We have run into some bad heparin.   We collected data and I will post it here.  We stopped collecting data when the results started to get better.  We figured that someone may have left a box of heparin laying in the sun too long, because we had heparin from the same lot number that would sometimes work fine, and somtimes not.

The Heparin we use is Hepalean  by Organon.  We use 10ml and 30ml vials of 1000 units per cc.

Case number  Initial Dose (units/Kg) Initial ACT (seconds)  Total heparin Given  Lot Numbers

IABP Pet Peeves

Andrew Zajac's picture

It really bugs me that in this day and age, the IABP can be misused so much.

It's bad enough to have to explain time and time again to nurses who get little exposure to the balloon that the IABP can be working fine (and properly supporting the patient) even if the augmented pressure is lower than the systolic pressure. When your up against experienced staff (staff physicians) who should know better, it's another story.

What are your IABP pet peeves?

Perfusionist Job Cuts

I'm sorry to say I just heard about job cuts in the province. As a parent of two kids, I can tell you that that's my worst nightmare.

It truly sucks for this to happen during the holidays, too.

Policies and Procedures

Andrew Zajac's picture

Every time it's policy and procedure review time, I think about how much easier it would be if we all could recycle each other's work.

How about a section of this site for policies and procedures? Any user would be able to upload their P&Ps to the section and anyone would have access to them for consultation, use or even to use as a base for a new, re-written document.

I suggest that the documents be published here under a CC license. Example:

Creative Commons License

You can click on the link, but basically, it is a copyright license which means that you may use the document as you wish, but must only follow two rules:

1 - You must give credit to the original author(s).

2 - You can only publish a derived work under the same conditions.

Would anyone else be willing to post their P&Ps on the site?

Work Life Mapping (tm)

Andrew Zajac's picture

kickbackSo I got this memo last week. It said "All staff, physicians, learners, volunteers and others who contribute to the daily operation of Kingston General Hospital are being asked to participate in an important tracking project next week to determine how our work is organized and how this impacts the quality of work life and patient care. " It said that all staff were going to spend between 2 to 3 hours filling out these forms.

Now, I'm just as keen as the next guy to improve my workplace, but this is fricken ridiculous. Why not have a short survey that blankets the whole hospital and then target more specific spots for such an in-depth study? The paperwork this is generating (and therefore we are paying for) is colossal!

I heard that just two paychecks ago, the hospital had run out of cash and had to take out a line of credit to pay its employees. I also found out the same week that the KGH's CEO's salary is the highest salary in the province for a hospital administrator. I guess were lucky to have him!

Site decisions.

Please take a look at the To DO list. Click on each item to discuss the topic. I will try to clear that list by the end of the week. It's just a matter of not leaving things half-done for too long a time.

Thanks.

oscp.ca email addresses

Andrew Zajac's picture

Would anyone like to have an oscp.ca email account?

For example, graham@oscp.ca

Let me know and we can set this up.

We are now blue.

Andrew Zajac's picture

Since the majority of the respondents liked blue, I switched the look and feel to a blue theme.

Also,

I would like for anyone who took photos at the AGM to upload them to the AGM Gallery.

You need to sign up and log in to upload photos or post a blog.

EDIT: I just made the registration process a little bit more clear. (Thanks Pat and Steve for your helpful comments!)

Let's get this site done!

Andrew Zajac's picture

Hello.

Please feel free to rummage around this site. Please look through the To Do list and leave comments so that I can implement whatever changes need to be done.

You can comment anonymously. You can also register as a user. I have included a few profile options that you need to enter to register such as address and phone number. I reckon this can be a way to keep an up-to-date list of members' addresses. Although this information is kept private, if you think it's not a good idea at this point, let me know and I will change it.

If anyone wants to help keep up the site, let me know. I can offer interested users the ability to make more profound changes to the site, if need be.

Cheers!

Andrew Zajac
