Michener and the OSCP and Delegated Acts

Steve Ditmore's picture

I would like to know what it happening between the OSCP and the Michener Institue. Are there any on-going talks or program discussions happening? Is this process being left for the CSCP to deal with? Is there an OSCP liason to the Michener Institue? If so, could he or she make some comments about what is happing on this site and/or in the CSCP Journal?

On another topic does anyone have the Delegated Acts Policy for their hospital in Ontario? If so, would you be willing to share?

Great job on the site Andy. I hope that more and more people begin to use this as a communication tool for the OSCP.

Steve,

The OSCP does not have a liason to the Michener. The OSCP is a Region of the CSCP and as such can avail of the services of their liason. Currently, I am on the Program Advisory Committee for the perfusion program. So I represent the OSCP at that meeting. We have had a meeting with the Michener, and expressed concerns we had. Basically, until we see the product that the revised program puts out, we are not going to know if the new system works, or if the Michener is really addressing our concerns.

Unfortunately, we have to wait until there is a graduated class or two to really know. Karim has given us everything we have asked for. My only issue is the Pediatric training. I would rather see a beefed-up clinical period, and not a shortened one. the rational had something to do with the OSAP students not being able to get money for an extended rotation, and Pediatrics was a hit or miss proposition. Some students got a good grounding while some only got sporadic exposure. Apparently the Michener is going to improve the lab and didactic portion of the pediatric section, and thereby improve the whole topic!!!

Lets just see.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for answering my question. I understand that the OSCP can utilize the CSCP's liaison however; I was under the impression that at this past OSCP meeting in London, there was some debate regarding how the OSCP can help the Michener to produce a better Perfusion graduate, etc. Are we going to do this through the CSCP? Also, the Michener Institution is a provincially funded school which also draws in students from the rest of Canada. Since the funding is from this province I thought that the OSCP may have a liaison as well as the nation body.

I do have concerns as well regarding the reduction of clinical education and evaluation time. Another concern, which I have mentioned to the Michener Institute before, is that of student assessment for manual dexterity and quick decision making. Even though these last two evaluations are rather subjective they need to be made quickly (prior to the student going into the Clinical phase) so that neither the student nor the instructors are wasting their time. I haven't given up on the Michener and am looking forward to the next clinical group coming through KGH, if needed.

Hi Steve,

I know this blog is old but the only delegated controlled acts (from my understanding anyway) that apply to us are 1) Administering a substance by injection or inhalation and 2) applying the application of a prescribed form of energy. Everything else would fall under Medical Directives that have to be approved by the hospital Medical Advisory Committee. I can post what Trillium has if there is still an interest.
