Evolution and Impact: The History of the OSCP

The OSCP officially obtained Letters Patent for Incorporation on February 14, 1991, marking a significant milestone in its journey. Since its inception, the OSCP has been dedicated to fostering education within the field, evidenced by its longstanding tradition of organizing Annual Scientific Sessions and AGMs.

In 1995, the OSCP successfully negotiated with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) to authorize perfusionists to perform the delegated medical act of administering oxygen and drugs. This authorization has since been upheld through CPSO Delegation Policies and institutional medical directives, polcies and procedures allowing perfusionists in Ontario to continue this practice.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, CorHealth approached the OSCP in the spring of 2023, seeking assistance with manpower issues. This collaboration identified three key areas of concern: provincial ECMO expansion, appropriate compensation, and training for new perfusionists. The OSCP has been instrumental in addressing these issues, fostering open dialogue with affiliates such as ORNGE and the Critical Care Society of Ontario to ensure adequate ECMO training and supervision by perfusionists.

Additionally, with the guidance of the OSCP, CorHealth developed a comprehensive compensation document for perfusionists. Throughout its history, the OSCP has remained committed to advocating for the interests of perfusionists within the medical community of Ontario. By encouraging, nurturing, and promoting the role of perfusionists, the OSCP continues to play a vital role in advancing the field of clinical perfusion in the province.
